«Reasons not to Chew and Spit»
Note: Chewing and Spitting often triggers binges
Food digestion begins the moment food goes into the mount and saliva glands begin the process of digesting and absorbing foods. When a person starves, either continually or for limited periods of time, the body starts to conserve calories. The body's metabolism slows down, so calories are burned off more slowly. At this time, the body will also try to absorb every single bit of nutrition possible.
As soon as the bulimic person puts food into his or her mouth, the salivary glands start to either absorb or predigest that food. Since bulimic people do not absorb enough nutrition through the normal digestive process, the salivary glands take on a more significant role. Bulimic people will often experience dramatic swelling of the salivary glands that leads to "chipmunk cheeks" enlarged cheeks or jowls.
Those enlarged salivary glands absorb or predigest every bit of food possible. With increasingly active salivary glands and a significantly decreased basal metabolism, the bulimic person may even experience Weight GAIN, despite avoiding regular meals and purging without fail after every binge.
